Example 1: April 2003 - Spondylosis Operation

A patient wanting to have a neck operation contacted a hospital in the UK and the price quote was around £8,000 (then exchange rate was £1 = 12Rand). The amount was R96, 000. Upon contacting Dr O.A.Ogunsina in South Africa, he contacted Pretoria East Hospital on behalf of the patient and they offered to perform the operation at about R40, 000, all accommodation costs included. Even with the influx of foreign clients and better equipments and stable Rands, the price of such medical procedures are becoming more and more affordable in South Africa. E.g. similar operations done in 2005 were a lot cheaper in 2006 and will become cheaper in the year 2008.


The non-availability of some of these medical procedures in the West African Regions and the long waiting list of patients on medical procedure list in the UK and USA opens South Africa as a viable potential market for these medical procedures and finally, the fact that it is a worldwide knowledge that South Africa has got one of the best climate conditions in the world also attracts the patients to the country.

The price became cheaper in 2007 and it is expected to become relatively cheaper in 2008.
